Glacier Bay, Alaska

Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, located in Southeast Alaska west of Juneau, is one of the most dramatic glacial landscapes in the United States. I had the opportunity to visit this extraordinary place in 2011 while traveling on a cruise from Seattle.

Throughout much of the journey the weather remained overcast, with advection fog forming as warm, moist air drifted across the cold surfaces of glaciers and icebergs. Rather than obscuring the scenery, these natural conditions created a quiet, atmospheric landscape where ice, water, and sky merged into a palette of subtle tones.

The photographs in this series embrace those moody conditions. Split toning was applied to accentuate the luminous blues within the glacial ice, reflecting the otherworldly beauty that defines Glacier Bay. Several images from this collection have been recognized internationally, including 1st Place in the “Nature – Seascapes / Waterscapes” category at the 2025 ND Awards.
